He completed his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Rome La Sapienza, Rome, Italy, between 1974 and 1980. He achieved board certification in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Physician Specialties in 1998. He has over 39 years of emergency room experience, including time at Bellevue Hospital and Huron Road Hospital in East Cleveland, OH.

Dr. Smith served in the United States Marine Corps as a Rifleman from 1968 to 1969 in Vietnam, received a Combat Action Ribbon, and was honorably discharged.
